Choosing Your Helpers

Some of the most important decisions you will make during the planning process are choosing who will make financial and medical decisions for you when you are incapacitated and who will handle the administration of your estate. It feels natural to name your spouse or a child to serve in these roles. Family members know you better than anyone else.  Unfortunately, the job is often much more complex than expected. Sometimes it is a good idea to name your spouse, a child, or a trusted friend as Executor or Trustee. Sometimes there are good reasons to use a professional trustee. Every case is different. But this may be the most important choice you make.
